CHAPTER NINETEEN

BACK AT

THE BALL

IVY and Rebecca had barely scooted into their glanagerie class on time; snow shoveling had taken far more time than anticipated, even using Loshes Washes. Ivy didn’t know if she could take Damaris’s smug face in one more class. Of course, Damaris wasted no time getting under Ivy’s skin.

“Professor Night? This terrible cold has me thinking. Remember the Ball last year, the one that Ivy ruined for everyone? I still have nightmares about it. How do we know we are safe with her around?”

Ivy rolled her eyes. Damaris really wanted everyone to hate her. People hadn’t been whispering around Ivy quite as much, but Damaris stirred the pot like it was her job.

But then Ivy looked around and saw most of the students nodding.

Hannelore leaned over to Ivy and whispered, “We know it’s not your fault, Ivy; we’re just scared.”

“That’s right,” added Lila Reeves, her Ethereal Stone glinting in her crown. “Even Damaris knows it wasn’t your fault. But I won’t repeat to you what she’s thinking right now.”

What a burden Lila’s mind-reading stone must be when she was around Damaris.

Ivy raised her hand. “Professor? What if our next glanagerie experience was back to that night? The night of the Ball? So that we could have another chance.”

“Yes!” piped up Rebecca. “I’d like a do-over.”

The students murmured in agreement.

“Excellent idea, Ivy. We shall do just that.”

Damaris looked crestfallen, then bored.

Derwin drew in a deep breath and closed his eyes, quill in hand stretched out over the bottle on the lectern. Then he opened his eyes and waved his quill over the bottle, which promptly began to glow with a purple and blue light. In the bottle were tiny dancing figures, all submerged in the water. The water rocked, as if in a dance, as distorted glimpses of long strands of pearls, partygoers, and peacock masks showed through. This was not just any masquerade; it was the Masquerade.

Smiling broadly at the students, Derwin gave the order: “Let’s go, then. All of you.” When the students hesitated, he reassured them, “Remember, this is not real—it’s merely my imagination. You will be safe, safe to take risks and try new things. Damaris, even you! Those with a Wagua Stone, I encourage you to be creative with this ballroom full of water. Try to float the Dark Queen right out the window with your powers! That’s what Waguas are made for.”

The students laughed tentatively and began filtering down to the front of the circular classroom. Even Damaris. Derwin wrote each student’s name on a piece of parchment, uncorked the bottle, and popped the parchment in. One by one, the royals and sqwinches were whisked into the bottle by a cloud of golden sparkles. Ivy steeled her nerves and was swept inside right after Rebecca and before Hayword.

When the dust settled, she found herself once again in the ballroom, deep underwater. She felt the weight of her wet gown anchoring her to the bottom. Her schoolmates waltzed underwater, oblivious to the danger they were in.
